Hey Chuck,
I saw an advertisement today for rum. It was called not Captain Morgan but Sailor Jerry rum which apparently must be for those of a different sexual persuasion maybe?
come on chuck–none of us are gonna believe you sung very well
dang–that sure is a shock about dan roz–and a total bummer. we lost a good grunt there. we talked a bunch about kham duc over the years–he was there in 68–i was in 70.
why would any grunt outfit throw away something when it just started stinking ?
geesh clay–how come no 1 got pics of the gun crews faces ?
Brothers,
Here’s the link to the funeral home where Dan’s body while lie if you care to leave a message for the family. http://www.vandenbergfuneralhome.com
Guys!
Dan Roczniak’s wake will be this monday from 3 to 9PM in Tinley Park, IL and his funeral will be I believe the next day at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetary near Joliet, IL. Tai and I plan to attend the viewing on Monday.
LT,
Sorry to hear about Dan. Remember meeting him at Hilton Head.
Guys!
I am deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of one of our brothers. Dan Roczniak passed away last evening at 8:30. He was hospitalized awaiting a lung transplant and didn’t make it. His wife said they hadn’t finalized funeral arrangements yet. Dan was a great soldier, friend and brother and will be dearly missed.
DON’T CLICK ON THE LINK IN THE POST JUST BELOW THIS ONE! It’s a spam posting and the link may be corrupted.
Clay: Do you remember the story of the guys in Alpha Company who shot a giant lizard in the same area, then carried around with them as proof until it started to stink? I asked one of them about it and he said it was true. He said it was 6 or 7 feet long.
Same general time frame and we were either still in Antenna Valley or the Mary Ann FB area. A machine gun crew stepped over a small log in a brushy area and while the gunner was getting ready to make his next step the log began to slither off. Great excitement followed, the gunner tried to fire straight down but it put such a kink in the belt it jammed the gun. Everybody in the column faced outward to see what was up and couldn’t see the small python. He made his escape and the gun crew felt they had been left dangling in the breeze.
Boys will be boys!

I remember the song very well or I should say I remember singing it very well. Like you, I remember only a few of the verses. Five RPG’s was a definate. I tried to post a comment about it a few weeks ago but what I wrote got washed out when I jazzed up the pass word. this getting old shit is a ball. I can now blame all my screw ups on age. I turn 62 on Friday and got Social Security all lines up. Life is good.
Sorry that you’ve had to do the difficult “word puzzle” for the past few weeks– I even have problems getting them right sometimes!
I regularly update the software this website runs on to keep up with the current version. This keeps it from being hacked, and it’s much easier to do small upgrades over time rather than one big upgrade every so often.
Apparently in the last update they introduced something in the anti-spam software that is incompatible with the server software this website is hosted on. Anyhow, now that I know how to fix it, I will get to it soon and make the captcha go away.
Orangutang’s sure weren’t extinct then. That jungle was full of their barking calls.
And, no, those monkey’s weren’t Marines….I don’t think. LOL
Oddly, while I saw plenty of monkeys in that area, I never saw a snake the whole time I was in Vietnam. I once saw a water leech I THOUGHT was a snake, though!
I also saw one elephant and probably a Tiger. I caught just a brief glimpse of something orange disappearing into the trees in an area where we had heard the damn things. It was either a Tiger or a dink wearing day-glow orange…which I doubt.
I never saw any monkey’s; just water buffalo, dogs, snakes, mosquito;s,flies, and centepede;s.Are you sure those monkey’s weren’t Marines?
Orangutans are considered extinct in Vietnam.
I hope you guys didn’t shoot the last one.
You can see almost anything if you drink enough rice wine……….
Bill: When we were out west of Tam Ky, in the area around LZ Mary Ann, there were monkey’s all over the damn place. Hordes of them. Black ones, red ones, brown ones. Some with long tails and some with no tails at all. That was real, triple canopy jungle, though. That’s where we shot the Orangutang.
Actually, SFC Musquez shot him with one shot after the whole platoon had expended at least a magazine each and missed. The ape was sitting high up in a tree on a hill top, probably 400 meters away or better, and we thought he might be a dink watcher. It was only after Musquez knocked him out of the tree that we could see the long hair flowing from his arms as he fell and knew what it was. We didn’t shoot him just for the hell of it.
Did anybody else besides Gary see Orangutangs or Rock Apes or any other monkey type creature? I have heard a few stories over the years and I am curious……R.I.P to are fallen comrades.
Jan. 11th is also 41 years since Pop’s Rose and Alan Gray were killed in an ambush in Antenna Valley.
Short Round: No, you’re not the only one. I never understood why these security things have to make the word so hard to read. Is it like maybe that’ll fool somebody? Well, it does….me!
Jim: When it doesn’t take your comment, just hit the back button and there it is again, with a different secret code. But, I always cut and paste my comments onto the clipboard before hitting “post comment” just in case. That way, I don’t lose it.
I posted a day ago but typed reCAPTCHA instead ot the two words!!!
In response to a comments of weeks ago. Christmas, etc. 1969. I don’t remember who else was there. We were drinking a lot durng the ceasefire on Christmas eve and were having a grand old time. 4-5 of us were standing on the hill where we were logged, singing Christmas Carols. I don’t remember if I was permanently assigned to Charlie or just attached (as 90mm guys were usualy) at that point. Officers kept coming by and telling us to “break up the jugfu..” They were right of course. Just because there was a ceasefire and we were enjoying it, doesn’t mean we couldn’t have been targets.
What I remember being the most fun is that we were making up and singling loudly, our own “12 days of Christmas.” As we went up to each next one, we would all discuss and pick stuff like “4 mama-sons” or “11 AKS firing.” The only two I really remember and you have to really think about how a choir hits the high notes on the 5th day usually-we sang “Five RPGs” and the other one I remember was the first day. “A sniper in a palm tree.” that was a fun day as I recall.
Sadly, tomorrow is Jan. 11. 42 years since Arky and Jake. I still think about those two guys and about Arky’s 4 kids who he was supposed to be going home to in a few days.
am i the only 1 having some hassles reading the 2 words at times ?
chuck–seems i remember 1st platoon having some ace of spades also
To all: Ching Lau tells me the deal for the reunion in WI next May is finalized and you can begin making reservations now. I think some of you already have. The information is below in this discussion forum
LT
I swear I tried my best to use them up.
We didn’t carry cards or anything else like that. It’s probably a good thing or we’d have had to attach one to the dog, a civilian, a pig and the Orangutang we shot out of a tree. They were all claimed as KIA’s (the dog counted as 2 because there were 4 legs left over from the MA).
Chuck,
If you had leftover decks of Ace of Spades maybe you didn’t as good a job as I thought you were doing. Leftovers??? Really??
Ben, Gary forgot to mention that you also get 5% discount as well!
Ben:
It’s at the Church Hill Inn, 2393 Gateway Dr, Sister Bay, WI 54234. May 17-21, 2012.
Do not get your reservations online. Call 800.422.4934 or 920.854.4885. Tell them you are with the Vietnam Reunion under the name of Mike (Ching) Lau. The rate is $129-169, depending upon how fancy you want to get. But…the 3rd night is FREE!
Check out the hotel website: http://www.churchhillinn.com
Gary
The 2nd platoon 69/70 used to leave the ace of spade as their calling card. U.S. Playing Card Co. used to send them to me. The packs were labeled “SECRET WEAPON
BICYCLE ACES OF SPADES”. Each deck had 52 aces of spades. I still have a few packs.
Ben:
Of course you’re invited. Don’t be silly! EVERYBODY is invited!
Thanks, Gary. I may have missed some communication, but I need to ask where or what motel and contact info.
Found internet connection again, so catching up (Fast Eddie went golfing). The Clarks are over at Hobie Sound.
Dec 31, 1969 we were in a figure 8 NL with Alpha. As we had Night Ambush on Christmas Eve (I assume I will deal with that when I get to the other side), I balked at the same assignment again on New Years Eve (after all we had nine squads), so we didn’t go. I feel bad about the 8 dead and many more wounded, but I feel I did right with the information I had at the time and as Terry points out we are here to tell the story. Such is the hell of war and the “Luck of the draw”.
I hope we are invited to the Wisconsin reunion. We enjoyed ourselves with my “combat brothers” in LeClaire. Door County is a neat place to go. Touristy, but laid back – no franchises except a few gas stations. We have vacationed there the last two summers and look forward to going back.
I made reservations today to spend the 17-19 May 2012 with the 70-71 group up in Sister Bay, WI on the Door Penninsula. I am looking forward to spending some more time with those brothers and their spouses. Hope others will come!
Terry and Mark: Alpha company got a lot of attention from the dinks when I was there too, in 70-71. It seemed they were always in contact.
I heard it was because they left an ace of Spades on dead dinks, but I can’t say if that was true or not.
ps: One of the security words I have to type to post this is “post-coital.”
Is that the same as cigarette and towel time? LOL
Mark, our sister company, A CO got hit hard that night, memory tells me they had 8 KIA. Could be wrong, but I do know Duane ( Shorty ) Williams was killed, a friend from my platoon who came north from the 82nd ABN. It was supposedly was a truce time but the dinks did’nt get the memo. Lots of different stories from that night but one I know was I wassupposed to go out on LP with Ben but Ty Harper Did’nt like the idea of it. They probably would have run right over us. Thank God for Ty’s instincts. It was a tough night for all but just a precursor to what was to come.
Terry, thanks for the update. It seems that A CO. ;for whatever reason drew a lot of attention from the gooks. When I was running the war room in BTOC , it was in April of 1970, A CO. and F TROOP were ambushed and lost 14 killed and 29 wounded.
I was just looking at some old pictures of my days in Vietnam and, from this point in life looking back, it’s hard to believe that all really happened. Could I really have been THAT young, doing THOSE things?
Mind bogglin’….ain’t it?
Spent New Years Eve with Bill Clark as we did 42 years ago. Some fireworks going off but not like last time. What a tragic night Dec 31,1969. Can never forget that night. This is the first time I have been with another Charlie Grunt on New Years Eve since then and it was OK. Had a great time!
Plan to link up with Ed & Marie Davis today.
Ben, being that I have blocked out a good portion of my tour, please remind me; what happened on Dec.31,1969.
how about those cowboys? NOT GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gary,
Sounds like good news to me.
Bill: It finally started raining here in North Texas a couple of months ago and we’ve had about 14 inches so far. It’s not enough to break the drought, but at least I don’t have to worry about grandkids disappearing into the cracks in my yard any more.
And, it’s been pleasantly warm. Today (New Year’s Eve) it should be about 70.
Larry: It must be nice to be a wealthy Snow Bird!
Cap:
I am a part time snow bird, I have to go home at the end of January. Still dreaming of being wealthy and buying lottery tickets. I am however wealthy in great friends and brothers one of whom is you :>)
I got a little behind in keeping in touch. Cap ask about the blizzard for Doc Sniff and I. I guess Doc Sniff got it all as I have been in south Texas since the day after thanksgiving and it didn’t snow there. I am in a rv park with four life time friends and we shrimp in the mornings, fish in the afternoons and gig for fish at night. It doesn’t leave much time for the important things in life. Here’s wishing a belated happy holidays for all my grunt brothers.
I finally heard from Doc Whitebird on next year’s reunion. He has set the dates of September 20-23, 2012. I will post the information of where and all that as soon as I get it from Doc.
LT,
Same here in PA as for as rain and being over 40 degrees. Happy New Year to all.
I just love these stop spam captchas! Although I have a heck of a time getting them right, I guess I am learning a new language along with it! For you folks suffering through drought I will tell you that we here have experienced our second wetest year ever since records have been maintained and we just experienced what I believe was the 13th warmest December ever. We will have had 20 days with a daytime high of over 40 degrees!! Global warming? HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL YOU GRUNTS!
Nice job Brandon!
Copy, good job looking out Brandon!
xx
Hey everyone,
I had to enable some extra spam protection below the form because for some reason the spam software we have been using suddenly stopped working. You’ll have to enter in the text in the red box below the main comment form for comments to work in the meantime. Sorry, but it’s the only way to keep the spammers from messing up the site and filling my inbox with comments to approve manually.
Lt…..The outcome was not in doubt and I was surprised they only lost by 14 pts. I think it went off at 13-1/2, but I held my line at 14 and did not get hurt.
Hey Russ,
Seems like the Packers beat the Bears by 14 points! What was the line again?
Merry Christmas from the Southern High Plains. Can’t speak for Larry but we got 20″ here and by and large it didn’t drift too bad. Nothing at all like 5 years ago when we got 4 feet in a week and major drifting. Knock on wood. Seriously cold this winter. I guess its all in what you get used to but as bad as the jungle heat was I would prefer it to the ice box those poor grunts in Korea had to contend with. May you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Years and the same to the guys doing our old jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Here it is Chritsmas eve and my 8yr old grandaughter is sending us hourly reports on Santa’s progress, What a great time of life for a kid! All my love to a great bunch of people, true Spirits of life. Looking forward to a great 2012 with hopes of seeing many of you soon
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to a great group of grunts. Hope to see more of you in September.
Wishing all my Brothers and their loved ones a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2012.
Special shout out to Sgt Fury who got the C/2/1 ball rolling.
WISHING A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY BROTHERS AND THEIR FAMILIES ON THIS CHRISTMAS 2011! MAY YOU ENJOY GOOD HEALTH AND PROSPERITY IN THE YEAR TO COME!
